Man, Now that's a Dog!

Man, another day in the cooler! ;-) He is doing well, just another day of chemo, a spinal tap and we’ll be out of here. We had Grandma McNulty stop by to keep him on his toes and have lunch. Then it was Gus! See the picture, what a DOG! 250 lbs of English Mastiff. He was getting ready to take over Shane’s bed and Shane was loving every minute of it. It’s time to hit the hay, so we’ll talk to you again tomorrow.

Homework, Smomework!

Today as a pretty good day. We got a glimpse of the old honery and funloving boy we all know. Had a lot of fun with Melanie and Kate, our Nurses here at the hospital and the clinic. Karen was working on the homework with him and Dad worked from the Hospital. He seems to be doing pretty well with the Cytarabine, a little drowzy and not very hungry, but that is it so far. Had a visit from Paul, who worked with Dad in the Navy and he brought a card from Dad’s old unit with a cool Itunes Gift card inside. Thanks to everyone at JFMCC Phoenix, we sure miss you guys.

A Few More Minutes, Then I'll do my Homework, I promise.

Not a bad day for our Trooper. He started the CyTarabine, which is a 5 day infusion and is one of the rougher Chemos. He hung out with his Brother and Dad while Mom attended a required CPR class for work. We had a boys morning, leaving the bed linens unfolded, underwear on the floor, complete chaos. It was a good morning! Then Mom came back and an emergency cleanup was held, which included the folding of linens, yuck!  Dad spent most of the day working from the Hospital and Shane’s sister Brittney showed up for a while. The rest of the evening has been some homework for Shane’s State Report and some computer games. He remains positive, but a lot sleepier on this new drug. Hope everyone has a good night and we’ll do this again tomorrow.

May 14th – 15th

Monday was the start of Shane’s 3rd round of Chemo. The day started out with a quick run to the school, where he turned in a ton of homework. Mom gave up a lot of her Mother’s Day to make sure he had it all done while Dad prepared for the Mother’s Day get together, Thanks Mom! Next, they checked in with the Librarian and got some high fives from some buddies in the hallway.  Then it was on to the clinic where they got his counts and accessed his chest port to get ready for the Hospital. Additionally, we got the good news that his PET scan from last week was clear, but we have to wait until the final scan just before his next round before we’ll know if the 4th round will be the last.

Tuesday morning he got his first of 2 spinal taps for this round. Everything went well and he continues to handle these things like a trooper. His Chemo starts up again tonight with a new medicine that is pretty nasty, but he is getting a low dose. Apparently, this medicine in a high dose can even affect the eyes, so hopefully he won’t have that issue. He did finish a good part of his State Report today in time to make the Yearbook! Nice work Son. Sometimes the weight of this hits like a ton of bricks, but one look at this guy and you can’t help but think, this is just a thing and we’ll be back to normal soon. He is truly our Hero!

May 10th

Shane had his clinic appointment today and the PET scan. All of his numbers look good and the preliminary results from the scan look very promising, but they don’t have the final read from the Radiologist. Shane spent the rest of the day relaxing and eating his favorite meal, Orange Chicken, preferrably Panda Express, but Costco will due in a pinch. His big Brother Jake came over for a game of Catan and Shane’s good friend Steven stopped by and joined the party. Shane is still fighting a cough, but it has gotten better and is looking forward to the weekend where he gets to be a little bit more normal for just a few days before we start this whole thing all over again.

May 8th – 9th

The last 2 days have been pretty good. Shane still has some nauseau and his energy is up and down. He has been catching up on school work and bugging the cat. He will be going for his normal Clinic appt. tomorrow and also a PET scan to determine the impact the treatments have had on the tumors. This should also determine how many more Chemo rounds he is going to have to endure. We’ll update you as soon as we know.

May 7th

He’s home again! Shane returned home around 3:00 pm today. His counts were up enough to leave the hospital and he is enjoying homelife once again. Unfortunately, he has to go back on Thursday, but just for a clinic visit and then the big PET scan which should tell the Doctors how many more rounds of Chemo he will need.  Then, back on Monday for another round for our trooper. He keeps showing us how to get back up after something knocks you down time after time and still have a pretty good attitude.

May 5th – 6th

Good News, the blood cultures they did upon our arrival at the ER, Thursday night, came back negative for any infections. His counts are still low, but they are climbing. At the current rate we are hoping to be out of here on Tuesday, but it’s back again on Monday, potentially, for his next Round of Chemo. This poor guy just can’t catch a break.

May 3rd – 4th – Back to the Hospital

Shane began having a low grade fever around 8:00 pm. Unfortunately, it climbed up to 100.4, which is the magic number that transports you to the ER . We got here about 11:30 pm and it’s now about 3:42 am and hopefully we’ll be in a room on the 7th floor soon. Of course the first temp they took when we got here was normal wouldn’t ya know. He has some pretty strong anti-biotics on board and is sleeping pretty well. Mom and I are hoping they will hurry with the transfer, these chairs must have come from a dungeon somewhere.

May 3

Shane had his normal clinic visit today. The good news is that he gets to remain home. The bad news is that his counts were down to around 8, so he will be homebound this weekend and he can’t have visitors. He is going back in on Monday to make sure his counts are on the rise and then he’ll get some much deserved freedom. It looks like the 14th of May will be the beginning of his next round of Chemo. They are supposed to do another PET scan next week to let us know where we are at and how many more rounds he has to endure. He truly is my hero, to take all this on and still be happy most of the time is a true sign of his strong character and a ton of courage.

Now that we are moved to the new site there are some videos for everyone to watch and we’ll try to add as many as possible. He is looking forward to doing one soon to say hello to everyone. He will also be starting up his blog soon as well.
